A pioneer in reviving and reintroducing non-traditional forms of navigation back into Hawaiian culture, Nainoa Thompson has spent his life navigating the world with the Polynesian Voyaging Society, of which he is now President. Under the tutelage of Mau Piailug of Satawal in Micronesia, Nainoa became the first Native Hawaiian to travel from Hawaii to Tahiti in 1980 using no modern equipment or technology. He has since led countless expeditions around the world on the Hokulea, promoting cultural heritage and exploration.
