Nick Beck, born and raised on Kaua‘i, has been a transformative figure in the world of Hawaiian canoe paddling and canoe sailing for decades. A two-time Molokai Ho’e Canoe Racing World Champion, Nick’s influence extends beyond competition. In addition to winning titles and coaching at the Waikiki Surf Club, Outrigger Canoe Club and Kaua’i Canoe Club, he also co-founded the Hanalei Hawaiian Civic Canoe Club and the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association, helping to shape the future of both outrigger paddling and canoe sailing in Hawai’i.

Nick’s innovative spirit is exemplified in his design and construction of the Holopuni, a 3-person sailing canoe that has become a benchmark for ease of use and durability in challenging interisland voyages. His dedication to canoe building began in the 1960’s when he crafted his famed six-man racing canoe, Waioli, from an invasive Albizia tree. This vessel became renowned for its speed and performance in the surf. He later built the Holomoana out of Indigenous Koa wood after Hurricane Iniki destroyed the Waioli. While Nick became a recognizable force in both surfing and canoe paddling, it was his time and dedication to canoe sailing on the Holopuni that reminded him of the traditional ways of our ancestors who would not only fish, sail and surf, but also voyage and explore. The Holopuni was a modern version of a voyaging canoe whose roots were ancient; in essence, a time capsule connecting the generations. The Holopuni became so popular and such an inspiration around the world that Nick created the Holopuni International Sailing Canoe Association, established to federate and harmonize Holopuni Sailing Canoe Associations around the world.

An educator by profession, Nick earned degrees from USC and the University of Hawai‘i, later becoming the principal of Hanalei Elementary School. His passion for his community was evident in his efforts to slow the rapid development of Hanalei and Kaua‘i and in his youth programming initiatives. Nick has previously served on several board of directors in his community, including the Hanalei Museum, Kilauea Point Natural History Association, and was a member of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. He also has given his support to Compassion International.

A true waterman, Nick’s life has been dedicated to exploring the Pacific, whether paddling, surfing, or sailing. His humanitarian work has taken him across the globe, particularly to Africa. Nick’s love for the ocean is shared with his four children and six grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews; all of whom carry on his legacy of respect for the sea.

Nick Beck’s contributions to Hawaiian culture, both on and off the water, have solidified his place as a legendary figure in the world of outrigger canoe paddling and canoe sailing.
