With fond remembrance, we honor Tim Guard, Board Member Emeritus to Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, who passed away in February 2020. He was an avid waterman who generously gave so that others may enjoy watersports.
At 12 years old, Tim Guard met Duke. He recalled, “I was introduced to Duke Kahanamoku and he gave me my first experience on a surfboard. He took this huge plank that looked like an aircraft carrier and without any effort at all carried it down to the water and I must’ve looked like a little frog on this huge board and we went out and we probably surfed for an hour or two and it galvanized my feelings about surfing.”
Tim Guard won the prestigious 1957 Makaha Junior Amateur Surfing Contest and four Moloka’i Hoe Canoe Racing World Championships. He was inducted into the Hawai’i Waterman Hall of Fame in 2017. “Really my whole life has revolved around the ocean—on it, or in it. It’s a playground for me… Second to my wife [Devon], it’s the love of my life,” he was quoted.
Tim Guard was a decorated Vietnam war hero honored with a Bronze Star, Navy Commendation, Navy Achievement medals, and an RVN Legion of Merit. Until recently, he served as Chairman & CEO of McCabe, Hamilton & Renny Co. in Honolulu. In addition to his many years of iconic leadership and unwavering support of ODKF, Tim Guard was also the Chairman of the USS Missouri Memorial Association and a former director of the Marimed Foundation and the Manoa Valley Theatre. He was also a longtime supporter of Hawai’i National Guard Youth Challenge Academy.
